Edwards Anker devised a crystalline, glass façade which refracts a rainbow of light that not only makes for a pretty picture, but encourages flow throughout the home. In fact, much of the home's use depends on the sun. So we have our places we know now according to where the sun is in any season." My husband is pretty fond of sitting in one of the new pieces that I designed outside because it has internet connection. "We have our outdoor table with a fire pit that we use right next to the house and we have a little shady tree-we'll sit under the tree for lunch time. The sliding doors, they open all the way so it's like an invisible glass wall that opens up completely." Friends and family frequently move in and out, settling in one of the furniture items dotting the property, many of which-like most items in the home-Edwards Anker designed herself. The home, she says, "is very much about indoor-outdoor living. "It's collecting 50% of the rain water which we use for garden irrigation and the salient system, but it it also acts as a reflecting pool," the architect explains. Next to the home, a cistern serves dual aesthetic and functional purposes.
Since the walls of the house are round, "you save 15-20% on building materials," Edwards Anker says. The home is LEED certified and adheres to many of the principles of Passive House design, the strictest barometer for building sustainability. Dubbed the "Cocoon House," Edwards Anker's home has a serpentine layout that not only makes for a more interesting structure, but also optimizes energy use.
